Feature Series: Life As An Unsigned Band

This was a series of feature articles I did for Stereoboard.com, looking at the day to day operation of an unsigned band and the people they interact with.

I spoke to Northern Irish bands of varying stature, promoters and sound engineers to get an idea of how much time and effort they put in to a pursuit which, on the most part, is voluntary.

Review: Stillpoint 'Some Lessons Hurt Like The Truths They Contain'

10-9-12  http://www.stereoboard.com/content/view/174753/9 Thursday saw the release of Belfast band Stillpoint’s second E.P. ‘Some Lessons Hurt Like The Truths They Contain.’ Support bands Droids, Window Seats and Deadlights didn’t just make up the numbers with performances of the highest quality, but it was Stillpoint who deservedly stole their own show. Mixing songs from their eponymous first E.P and the new release, the trio showed that they are a force to be reckoned with both locally and further afield. The E.P. itself is considerably more refined than their debut. Stillpoint seem to have honed their sound into something that is both unique and is still a reflection of their respective influences. Review: Uber Glitterati, The Good Fight, Colenso Parade

Elizabeth McGowan’s vocals shone through the melee of synths and bass, but did little to stir a mostly uninterested crowd from already established conversation. Appropriate applause was the customary audience reply to every song, but the duo’s original material lacked the kick, the bite, the killer touch needed to turn heads and demand attention. Disappointingly, a cover of Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’ was the highlight of an opening act who might not have been the best suited to this bill. The Good Fight greet a marginally bigger crowd, but play with the energy of a headliner.
